How to Crack APSC Exam in First Attempt | Expert Strategy & Tips

Author: Pallab Jyoti Bora | Cleared APSC Mains 2021 & Appeared in Viva/Interview

Cracking the APSC exam in the first attempt is the dream of many aspirants in Assam. With changes in the exam pattern and increasing competition, smart preparation is more important than just long study hours.

I, Pallab Jyoti Bora, cleared APSC Mains in 2021 and also appeared in the Viva/Personal Interview. Based on my journey, I am sharing a structured plan, along with how I used ChatGPT to summarize bulky topics and create revision notes. This mix of traditional study and AI-powered learning can help you crack the exam in your first attempt.

Step-by-Step Strategy to Crack APSC Exam

1. Understand the Latest Exam Pattern

  • Prelims: 2 Papers (GS I & II), 200 marks each, objective type, no optional subject.
  • Mains: 6 Papers (Essay, GS I–V, GS of Assam), 250 marks each, descriptive + objective, no optional paper.

2. Master Time Management and Syllabus

Analyze the full syllabus, set a realistic timetable, and prioritize Assam-specific topics.

3. Build Conceptual Clarity

Start with NCERTs (6–12), move to standard books like Laxmikanth (Polity), Spectrum (History), and Assam Yearbook.

4. Stay Current with Current Affairs

Read The Assam Tribune and The Hindu, track Assam government schemes, and make concise notes.

5. Practice Answer Writing

Write structured, analytical answers. Use past years’ questions and practice essays regularly.

6. Attempt Mock Tests

Take full-length and sectional mocks for Prelims and Mains. Analyze mistakes and improve strategy.

7. Consistent Revision

Revise using short notes, flowcharts, and mind maps. Keep the last month for revision only.

8. Prepare for CSAT (Paper II)

Even though qualifying, CSAT needs consistent practice in comprehension, reasoning, and math.

9. Prepare for Interview (Viva)

I personally appeared in the APSC Viva/Personal Interview. The key is confidence, communication skills, and awareness of Assam-specific and national issues. Mock interviews help a lot.

10. Stay Motivated

Discipline and consistency matter more than last-minute hard work. Stay positive and stick to your plan.

My Experience & Use of ChatGPT

During my APSC preparation, time management was my biggest challenge. To save time, I used ChatGPT to create summaries of lengthy NCERT chapters, generate quick revision points, and even practice answer structures. While AI helped me revise efficiently, deep reading and self-practice remained the foundation.

Key Takeaways

  • Understand exam pattern and syllabus thoroughly.
  • Prioritize Assam-specific content and current affairs.
  • Focus on NCERT basics, conceptual clarity, and answer writing.
  • Revise regularly and attempt mock tests.
